Hanadama pearls must be certified by the Japan Pearl Science Laboratory in Tokyo, Japan. Each pearl strand or jewelry item has a unique numbered certificate issued by Japan Pearl Science Laboratory. The certificate states that the strand is hanadama.

The Hanadama Quality Standard Explained

The Japan Pearl Science Laboratory uses a variety of testing methods to determine hanadama pearl quality. They include:

• magnification
• inner inspection by optical fiber
• spectro-photometric reflectance
• teri value analysis (luster value analysis)
• soft X-ray

The Japan Pearl Science Laboratory Hanadama Grade pearl quality standard states that:

1. The thickness of nacre of each pearl is guaranteed to be at least 0.40MM.
   (The measurement is from pearl surface to the center of pearl. Some on-line pearl sellers misstate this figure. These sellers often say that nacre thickness is 0.80MM when the JPSL certificate only guarantees 0.40MM.)
2. The luster of each pearl is guaranteed to be at least very strong. (determined by teri value analysis)
3. The surface quality of each pearl is guaranteed to have no more than very slightly imperfections. (determined by magnification).
